Read on for a list of some of the best places to explore and discover with your family while in the Kansas City area.
Located in Union Station, Science City offers hands-on educational opportunities for children of all ages in the family. It has 14 interactive exhibits featuring a range of topics, from robotics to chemistry. Admission includes access to the planetarium and check the calendar as there are special events throughout the year. Our family of 5 had a great homeschool learning day at Science City.
This historic landmark was once a prominent train station but now serves as an entertainment complex featuring shopping outlets, restaurants, movie theaters and much more! As mentioned above, Union Station also has interactive exhibits like Science City or Planetariums where you can learn about outer space with your family which makes it a great stop especially if you are a homeschool family.
So much fun was had by the entire family at this Kansas City destination. This petting farm located at Wyandotte County Park offers an opportunity for children to interact with a variety of animals such as alpacas, miniature horses, goats, sheep, chickens and more. The farm also has a playground area and picnic spots so you can pack a lunch for the family and make a day out of it.
If you are looking for something more wild than Rose Children's Farmstead, then check out the KC Zoo! Here you can find over 200 species of animals from around the world. The zoo also hosts many educational programs and activities throughout the year so be sure to check the calendar or website for upcoming events!
This is one destination that will definitely keep your all the kids in the family entertained all day! We started the morning at Lego Land (indoor facility) and then hopped over the Sea Like aquarium which is right next door. The aquarium houses over 6500 marine creatures including sharks, seahorses and octopuses which were spectacular to see!
A great place for outdoor exploration with the family while in Kansas City is Lakeside Nature Center located in Swope Park. Here you can find trails winding through forests and wetlands where you can spot wildlife like deer or foxes! The center offers educational programs like bird watching workshops or archery lessons for those interested in learning more about nature or looking for a great day out in the city for homeschool.
Swope Park, as mentioned above offers plenty of hiking trails as well as two lakes where families can rent boats or kayaks if they wish! Our kiddos always have a football or soccer ball in the trunk so we grabbed a ball and played on the sports field.
If your kids love history then this should be on top of your list! The museum has six galleries displaying artifacts from Native American culture up until World War II making it an excellent way to learn about local history in Kansas City. This is another great option if you are looking for a homeschool opportunity in Kansas City with the family.
Another great homeschool stop is the historical site is Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm. Here you and the family can experience life in 1860s Kansas city by taking part in activities such as wagon rides or blacksmithing demonstrations. They even have live animals like cows or pigs that the kiddos can feed!
If you and the kids want to take a little trip south towards Gardner, Kansas where Yaya’s Alpaca Farm is. This farm has dozens of alpacas roaming freely around its grounds ready for kids (and adults!) to observe, learn about and take pictures with them!
Last but not least is the Money Museum located at Federal Reserve Bank in Downtown KC. This museum is also a great homeschool learning opportunity as the museum provides insight into how money works while providing interactive displays showing off different currencies from around world using 3D holograms!.
All of the exploring in Kansas city with your family will make you hungry. Most of the days that we are exploring I pack lunches for the family, but here are some of the restaurants that we did try while in KC.
