How to Care for b.e.happe Slouch Hat

Keep Your Slouchy Beanie Hat Looking Like New

Want to know how to clean a beanie without stretching it out of shape or dulling the stitch definition? Our crochet slouchy beanies are made to be multi-seasonal and long-lasting, and keeping one looking like new is simpler than it seems. Unlike a pom hat, there's no faux fur to work around here, just a gentle hand-wash, a flat dry, and the occasional surface clean-up.

Step One: Determine the type of yarn

Check the tag sewn inside your slouch hat before washing — every b.e.happe hat is labeled as either 100% acrylic or an 80% acrylic / 20% wool blend. Since a slouch hat is just the crochet body with no pom to work around, the wash process is a little more straightforward than our pom hats, but the same gentle handling still applies.

Step Two: Hand-wash the hat body

Hand washing is by far safest method for cleaning your handcrafted slouch hats. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of gentle and dye-free detergent. Rinse the hat thoroughly with clean water until no suds remain. Do not wring or squeeze the hat as it can distort the shape of the b.e.happe slouchy beanie.

Step Three: Dry the hat

Lay the slouch hat flat on a clean towel and fold over the towel on the body of the hat. Gently press the towel down to remove water on the body of the hat. Lay the hat down on the towel to finish drying.

Step Four: Remove stains

For more stubborn stains on the slouch hat such as along the brim where makeup may have been rubbed off, apply a small amount of stain remover or dye-free soap to the affected area and gently rub it in. Let it sit for a few minutes before washing as before. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the yarn fibers.

Step Five: Clean up body of the slouchy beanie

Once your crochet hat is clean and dry, the last two steps to getting your slouch hat looking like new is cleaning up the surface and re-shaping the beanie. If the slouch hat needs to be reshaped, gently stretch the stitches vertically. Watch this video on how to reshape the b.e.happe Simple Slouch Hat or this for the Puff Stitch Slouch Hat.

Due to friction, it's natural for any knitwear to get fuzzy over time. If you're looking for the fastest way to get pills off a beanie, skip the scissors — we've switched to a fabric de-fuzzer tool, which clears pilling evenly without any risk of snagging the crochet stitches. See exactly how we use it here.

Now you know how to care for slouch hat. Hand washing, air drying, and cleaning the surface are the keys to keeping it looking great all winter season. Remember to always read the care instructions on the tag and avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals. With these simple tips, you can enjoy your cozy hat for seasons to come.
