Discover the Marvels of Joshua Tree National Park: A One-Day Journey from the South

Ah, the open road! It whispers tales of adventure and mystery, especially when it leads you to Joshua Tree National Park. This storied landscape is where otherworldly trees meet rock formations fit for a surrealist painting. To all you hikers, national park enthusiasts, and roaming RV families with a love for natural wonders, have we got a one-day Joshua Tree National Park itinerary for you! 

This itinerary is for entering at the Cottonwood Visitor Center, the entrance is at the southern end of the park, close to I-10. There is an entrance fee per vehicle or if you can use your America the Beautiful Pass which gives you access to all national Park Service-managed sites for a year. Also there is no cell service in the park and pes are not allows on the trails. 

Start the morning at the Cottonwood Visitor Center and grab a Junior Ranger packet. There are souvenirs and grab a map of the park here. 

Cholla Cactus Garden

Start your day with the early sunrise hues lighting up the spikes of the Cholla Cactus Garden. Here, the sun plays hide and seek, casting shadows that transform these prickly beauties into a radiant morning delight. Trust us, you don't want to miss the sun's grand entrance here—it's like nature's version of a Broadway show!

Arch Rock

Next, jaunt over to Arch Rock, an impressive natural arch that looks as if giants played a game of rock Jenga and left behind their artistic touch. The 1.2 mile out and back trail is an easy walk however it take a bit of scrambling up the rocks to get under it for photo opportunities. Don't just stop at the Arch however, wander around the amazing rock formations to check out the scenery...it was more beautiful than the arch!

Whale Rock

Whale Rock is not your average boulder. With a little imagination, you'll see it bears an uncanny resemblance to a whale breaching the desert's surface and can be seen near the Arch Rock Trail.

Skull Rock + Elephant Rock

These two granite rock formations are shaped like their names. Skull rock is a popular destination along Par Boulevard and is just east of Jumbo Rocks Campground. To get a photo with Skull Rock it is a short walk from the parking area. Elephant rock gets its name from the profile view, is located south of Skull Rock near the parking spaces for Skull Rock and Discovery Trailheads in Joshua Tree.

Hall of Horrors

Contrary to its name, the Hall of Horrors is a place of sheer beauty and wonder. The Trailhead and parking area is on the north side of Park Boulevard. This stop as vault toilets at the parking area.

The Hall of Horrors loop trail take you past a pile of boulders with slow canyons less than a mile away from the parking area. To see the slots, walk the trail clockwise and you will weave through Joshua Trees, circling large rock formations and on the backside of the rock pile are small groups of boulders. You will scramble up these boulders and find an entrance to the slots. The one on the right is wider than the one on the left. If navigating through tight squeezes isn't your thing, definitely climb up the towering rocks for a view that will provide both awe and a sense of calm.

Lunch at Cap Rock

By now, you've earned a snack or lunch break, and Cap Rock has the picnic tables and grills. This rock is located in the central part of Joshua Tree National Park. About a .4 mile walk to the Cap Rock formation with interpretive signs along the way to learn about the area its a great afternoon stop.

Keys View – The Grand Finale

Cap off your Joshua Tree rendezvous at Keys View, where the vast expanse of Coachella Valley spreads out before you with panoramic views. Take the .2 mile trail from Keys View to Inspiration Peak to see 360 degree views. This stop is wheelchair accessible with a paved, sloped path.
