Communicating with friends and loved ones about what traditions they enjoy or don't enjoy is helpful because everyone may be feeling the same way. The holidays are a time to remember the reason for the season, experience a time of joy and surround ourselves with those we care about. False expectations clutter the spirit of the holiday season.
1. Purchase family gifts rather than individual gifts
This can save you time and money in the long run.
2. Stay organized.
Make a list of what needs to be done and when it needs to be done by. This will help ease some of the stress that comes along with the holiday season. I use the Simple Purposeful Brain Dump notepad when I feel overwhelmed with ALL the things!
3. Gift experiences.
Take the guess work out of having to go and buy gifts for each person. Pick an activity, spend time with loved ones and create memories together rather than giving a physical gift.
4. Decide once and be done.
I did this when the kids went to school. Each teacher got the same gift. Don't spend hours debating what you get each person!
5. Ask for help.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, ask your friends or family members for help with cooking, cleaning, or shopping. They'll be more than happy to pitch in!
6. Potluck style meals.
Instead of making (and then cleaning up) an entire holiday meal by yourself, ask your guests to bring a dish to share! Not only will this lighten your load, but it'll also give you a chance to try some new recipes!
7. Frozen baked goods or order from a bakery.
This is a great way to get delicious holiday desserts without having to spend hours in the kitchen! Your local grocery store probably has a great selection of frozen pies and cakes that would be perfect for your holiday gathering. Or support local and order dessert from a local bakery - everyone will love it!
8. Less is more.
Pare down your decorations this year - fewer lights, fewer decorations, fewer commitments. You'll find that less is actually more when it comes to enjoying the holiday season!
9. Say no.
If you can't add it to your plate, say no. It's okay to say no to holiday invitations, parties, and events that you don't really want to go to. You don't have to do everything - focus on what's important to you and let the rest go.
The holidays are meant to be enjoyed - not dreaded! By following these 9 simple tips, you can simplify the season and focus on what's truly important: spending time with those you love. Wishing you all a happy and stress-free holiday season!
